"Shanti means peace, rest, calmness, tranquility, or bliss. The poet T.S. Eliot translated it as 'The Peace which passeth understanding.'"  ~ wikipedia

"'Om Shanti' means peace for all human kind, peace for all living and non living beings, peace for the universe, peace for each and every thing in this whole cosmic manifestation. We pray not only for our loved ones or for ourselves, but rather we pray for every one and every thing."  ~ anonymous

"Shanti is chanted thrice not for emphasis but because disturbances are of three distinct categories. In Sanskrit, these are referred to as adhi-daivikam (mental disturbances that come from God), adhi-bhautikam (disturbances that come from the world), and adhyatmikam (disturbances stemming from the self)."  ~ amritapuri.org
